Participation vs Management

Most owners and leadership teams know their business better than anyone.

They understand the customers, their people, the business health, the pressure points and the opportunities. They usually know where the business needs to head and often have a good sense of what needs to change.

The hard part is not always the thinking. It is often creating the space, structure and discipline to turn that thinking into clear decisions and action. Third party involvement allows business owners and leaders to focus on participation and contribution rather than managing process, agendas, personalities and capturing the essence of important conversations.  This adds real value.

A Different Lens

A good external facilitator or chair/partner is not there to arrive with all the answers. The role is to help the team lift out of the day-to-day, have the conversations that matter and bring a level of challenge and structure that can be hard to create internally.

Sometimes that means asking the obvious question that no one in the room wants to ask. Sometimes it means calling out where the conversation is getting stuck or too comfortable. Sometimes it is simply helping the team step back and look at the business with a bit more perspective.

There is also real value in neutrality. Internal conversations often carry history around roles, relationships, past decisions, assumptions and politics. A third-party voice can help separate the issue from the people, create a more level playing field, and make sure the important perspectives are heard and not just the loudest ones.  This can make it easier to focus on the core issue and filter out other factors that often create noise.

Greater accountability

One of the biggest benefits of having an external voice involved is the additional accountability it can bring once the strategy development is finished and it’s time to execute.

It is easy for good ideas to lose momentum once everyone returns to the normal rhythm of the business. Priorities compete, diaries fill up, urgent issues take over, and the strategy can quickly become something that was agreed in the room but not consistently driven outside it.

An external partner can help keep the work live by dragging the key leaders in the business out of “the busy” to focus on what everyone collectively agreed was important and captured in a strategy roadmap.  Focus on what’s important not just what’s urgent.

That means turning discussion into clear priorities, assigning ownership, building the right operating rhythm and making sure progress is reviewed regularly. It also means helping leadership teams stay honest about what is moving, what is stuck, and where decisions or trade-offs are needed.

This is often where Checkside clients experience significant value.
